The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) is an inter-governmental, international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services and systems.
SMIIC short name and the SMIIC logo have been registered on 29/06/2021 by Turkish Patent and Trademark Office which is the member of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
According to the SMIIC Statute, the main SMIIC logo (SMIIC+design) is a registered mark and use of the SMIIC logo is in principle granted only to SMIIC Member States thru their national standardization and accreditation bodies and metrology institutes which represent SMIIC in their respective countries.
Only SMIIC, SMIIC Member States, SMIIC Councils and SMIIC technical committees (TCs) are allowed to use the SMIIC logo and SMIIC short name.
The members of SMIIC, as the members of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), should take suitable action in case they trace any abuse of SMIIC’s intellectual property i.e. SMIIC trademarks and SMIIC logos which could mislead the consumers.
The registration is generally per country and it is the SMIIC Member’s duty to take care of the registration in its country. It is expected that Member States shall take all appropriate measures that are in accordance with national legislation to prevent the unauthorised use of the SMIIC trademarks in their national territories and bear the related costs.
SMIIC logo usage is not authorized in connection with certification since this would give the impression that is SMIIC that has carried out the certification or has approved it. On the other hand, SMIIC develops and maintains OIC/SMIIC standards but does not itself carry out any certification.
