The Eleventh Meeting of the SMIIC General Assembly (GA) was held in Istanbul, the Republic of Turkey on 07 May 2017 at the Marmara Taksim Hotel, hosted by the SMIIC General Secretariat. The meeting was attended by the 26 SMIIC Member States, 2 Observers as well as the representatives of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Islamic Center for Development of Trade (ICDT) and Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Turkey. The representative of Cote d'Ivoire attended the meeting as an observer.
The meeting started with the recitation of verses from Holy Qur'an. H.E. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Ali ÇELİK, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology of the Republic of Turkey addressed to the SMIIC GA Members after the opening speech of SMIIC Chairman of Board of Directors and the message of H.E. Dr. Yousef A. OTHAIMEEN, Secretary General of OIC.
During the meeting, SMIIC Secretary General introduced the recent developments, activities, and achievements since the last GA Meeting. The GA Members welcomed the organization of the SMIIC Technical Committee Week which was held on 26-31 March 2017 in Istanbul and the meetings of the Technical Committees (TC1, TC2, TC4, TC5, TC8, TC9 and SMIIC/CCA) and called upon the SMIIC Member States to participate in the relevant TCs meeting which will be held on 22-24 May 2017 and 25-30 September 2017 as the upcoming TCs Weeks. The GA Members expressed their appreciation for the launching the online sales system of OIC/SMIIC standards on SMIIC website and also encouraged the initiatives of the General Secretariat to establish cooperation dialogues conducted at international levels like ISO and IEC.
2016 SMIIC Budget Post Closing Trial Balance, Report of the Financial Auditor, 2018 SMIIC Budget Proposal and Revision of Major Strategic Activities/Actions Document of SMIIC Strategic Plan 2016-2020 were discussed and approved by the SMIIC GA Members.
The most significant outcome of the meeting was the approval of the revisions of SMIIC Statute, Rules of Procedure, Financial Regulations, and Staff Regulations. With this revisions, the organs of the SMIIC that are working in the main mandates - standardization, metrology, and accreditation - were re-structured and strengthened allowing the utmost participation and contribution of SMIIC Member States in the relevant technical work. It will also shape the SMIIC's future activities with a clear, transparent, efficient and Members driven approach.
At the end of the meeting, Member States expressed their thanks to the General Secretariat for the excellent meeting arrangements.
